In December 2019, the Fremont City Council awarded PlanIT GEO with a contract to complete a citywide inventory of all street and public trees and a tree canopy assessment, as well as a corresponding tree inventory software system.
Last month, the PlanIT GEO staff started conducting the physical inspection of all street and public trees throughout the city. Certified Arborists, Tree Inspectors, and GIS Specialists are logging all tree details such as the exact location, species, and size. This inventory and canopy assessment will continue for the next six to nine months.
PlanIT GEO staff members are easily identifiable by their orange safety vests, hard hats, and name badges. They will not be able to answer questions about City policy or processes. If you have questions about these subjects or want more information about Urban Forestry, please visit the City Urban Forestry webpage or call 510-494-4730.
When completed, the inventory and canopy assessment results will be used to inform the City’s first Urban Forest Management Plan. Based on the tree inventory data collected and analysis of available staff, equipment, and budget resources, the plan will provide detailed recommendations and resources necessary to effectively manage street and public trees. In addition, the plan will provide the City and the Fremont community with information surrounding the significance of an urban forest and the sizeable role it plays in contributing to sustainability and the City and State’s Climate Action Plan.
